burger club of oakland

Recently my friend Hanna Strange introduced an idea for a few of our friends to start a burger club. Eating at various burger joints in the bay area and rating them. Tonight was our first crack at developing our club. Tasks of the evening included an agenda of rating systems, categories, name and of course eating.

I had a simple "baby" burger, a 1/3 lb of beef with cheddar cheese, tomato, grilled onions and onion rings , pickles, lettuce served between a french roll.

Vals is a historic burger diner tucked away in the east bay in the heart of Castro Valley. It is a bit of a trek but the ambience is nice. Full of east bay history Vals has been making burgers since the fifties. I heart this place. If you havent been there venture out! It will be worth it.
As for our overall rating you'll have stay tuned and look out for the burger clubs blogs for ratings and dining tips.

new additions

This year has started very productive in the studio. I was contacted by a friend, who opened a lovely shop called Mariom Rose down in the POPUPHOOD, to carry some work and be one of their vendors. Hopefully this will keep me very busy this year as well as make a little dough. I recently make a silk screening station out of my old drafting table and transformed my dads old steamer trunk for a desk. The studio is all cleaned up and organized ready for working.

crab feast

Crab is probably my numer one crustacean. Win Walker graciously hosted a wonderful crab bake last night, a rad idea that can be economical and fun for dinner and friends. 99 RANCH has these tasty ocean floor dwellers for $6 a pound, try and get em at the height of the season, i have picked some up as low as $3 a pound. Nevertheless if everyone pitches in a makes a side dish your well in your way for a good night od crab. The dinner was accompanied with a homemade "bakesale betty slaw," bread, baked potatoes and a slew of dipping sauces. As i was very prepared for a evening of crab carnage i brought my own sheller, appron and face towel, but i loved everyones enthusiasm with some DIY shell tools such as, a garlic press and of course forks. After dinner we were delighted with a awesome slide show of wedding pictures and of course a round of WIi bowling.
Hurry and get them crab before the season ends!

bahn mi picinic

You gotta love the french influence combined with vietnamese ingredients. My latest food creation, the bahn mi sandwich. Broken down into three parts this ingenious combination of slaw, meat (tofu in this case) resting between a crunchy baguette.
Jullienne carrots, dichon and zuccini.
In a sauce pan boil a ration of 2 : 1 water and distilled vinegar and sugar to taste. Let cool and add the slaw and set aside for a 30 minutes. In a pan i sauteed tofu with a black bean chili sauce and fresh ginger garlic and sweet onions. Cut the baguette to desired length. Mayo is optional. Lay thinly sliced cucumber on bottom slice of bread. Next lay a generous amount of the tofu or meat. Top the tofu with the slaw and top ot off with fresh cilantro and enjoy!
My mom gave us a new picinic basket we packled the sandwiches and some soup in. With the dogs and the basket we headed out to Briones Regional Park for a nice picinic and hike with our pups.
With leftover slaw I did my own mixing of cultures and made a pulled por bahn mi for my Monday work lunch, this is a highly recommended mix.

POPUPHOOD was so RAD! Thanks to everyone who came out to support local makers and new business owners. The new shops are truly amazing. Keep your ears open as the CoffeeBike and El Taco Bike are planning a popup brunch soon. The Chrome Van came out and was slinging shoes for $25. I also met a 63 year old cyclist who regullarly tours to Denver on his bike, he looks like hes 25. I ran out of both roasts and got some really good reveiws and interest about roasting at home. I think I actually inspired some people. Anyway if you live in or around Oaklnd, go downtown and check out the new shops on 9th and Webster. I heart OAKLAND! Oh and Jean Chuan even stopped by for a cup and a photo op haha!

It was about two years ago when I was invited to the "Super popup shop". Now it's a whole pop up hood! I was honored to be invited by the coolest bike shop in the Bay Area. Sam and Mackay asked me to bring the CoffeeBike for the grand opening of their new shop. I didn't realize how big this was going to be, for me and all of Oakland. shroom hunting

last year i was fortunate to get some foraging for mushrooms at a friends cabin in South Lake Tahoe. He has been foraging near his cabin for a few years now and was able share some experience and knowledge of some of these delectable micro organisms.

we were able to find some king bollets and some oysters, and some more psychedelic mushrooms .
The king was amazing in the morning, we cleaned em up and and cooked them with some eggs and cheese. The oysters I brought home and made a nice mushroom sandwich.

Southern Exposure's Annual Art Auction 2011 MEGA MEGA MEGA
I was honored to have been asked back to participate on SOEX's auction planning committee once again. The gallery is so fun and is run by a charming bunch of ladies. This year I had the the task of topping my E.T. photo booth. So due to the theme this year I chose to build a money grab air booth. It was really fun to figure out the engineering of such a project. Despite its DIY look I think it was a complete success. It was rad seeing people of all ages participate in the booth. We had some wonderful prizes to win in the booth donated to SOEX from the Academy of Sciences, Delfina and we even gave away some lottery scratchers.

The art was simply amazing and generated some awesome energy during the live auction. Some of my favorites are in the video above. Kelsey Nicholson, Nathan Lynch, Jason Jagel, Amy Casey, Gina Tuzzi. Check out more at SOEX.org for more info and check out their flickr for more photos of the event.

success mouth watering pork

thanks for everyone coming to help eat all that pork. the skin was crispy and salty, the meat delicious and juicy. And yes cooked through. we uncovered the pig around 6pm, leaving it cooked for around 8 hours.

the meat was tender enough to pull apart with our hands. taking apart an animal with your bare hands was satisfying and nostalgic. along with a can of bud-light all i need was a bottle of whiskey to finish it off.

a great question was raised during the feast. what is with the fruit in the bigs mouth?

upon further research i haven't found a conclusive answer. the first was something about letting intestinal gases release while it's cook, another that it was just aesthetic. but my favorite was an explanation of how with out the fruit the pig's mouth looked as if it were giving a grimace instead of a smile.

it has been awhile since iv'e roasted a pig. but thanks to Sou's birthday the chance has risin yet again. i grew up roasting pigs and goats in cucamonga ca my father and uncles butchered the animals in our backyard. stepping into Sou's east oakland home i was reminded of all the fun it was growing up hella asian.

it's also rad to see Sou's little nephew getting in the mixed and being exposed to the carnage of cooking whole animals.

how does one roast a pig? fairly simple.

1. get friends to dig a big hole

2. get a pig 80lbs will cost about 100$ or so

3. banana leaves

4. bamboo shoots

5. lava rocks or river rock

6. hardwood and charcoal. walnut is best for the meat

7. pre heat rocks

8.stuff rocks into pig

9. cover pig with leaves and wrap with chicken wire

10. set pig on coals

11. cover pigs with wet burlap sacs or wet sheets

12. cover with dirt.

13. drink beers and wait

Sou went to an A's day game. And i moved a couch and made a two pizzas.

surf and turf

due to the recent finding of high cholestrol, I decided to make a low fat surf and turf bbq.
first layer: coals, soaked alder chunks (super longs purchase), two bricks (deflect heat), soaked corn. While the your food, marinating and such, soak your chunks and corn.

below i positioned the coals on one side to heat and smoke the chicken thighs hotter, while the red snapper smokes slower, since it will cook faster. and the corn gets some of the juices from the dripping seasoning of the fish. once everything was position i closed the top and let it smoke. the bottom air vents, all the way open and the top vent closed and away from the direct heat.

this weekend was full of food, fun and a little bit of art. Saturday morning I helped Kelsey Nicholson take down her show at Michael Rosenthal Gallery. We enjoyed some delicious and beautiful lattes next door from Four Barrel coffee. Kelsey is a wonderful bay area artist and a lover of dogs. Look out for other upcoming show by clicking on her link above. I thank Kelsey for keeping me motivated about making and thinking creatively these days.

Lately most of my creativity has been in designing mugs and cooking. Last week I through on some grilled cheese sandwiches on the bbq, filled with heirloom tomatoes, soaked in balsamic and oil, cabot cheddar on some wheat bread. And yes people grilled fluffer nutters on white bread! It was actually really delicious!

The walking tour was rad. Posting up on the 5th stop under the overpass was a lil windy for monty but, the foot traffic was awesome. The coffee bike caffeinated "tourists" before finishing the tour. yesterday everyone enjoyed a really beautiful evening of art, soup and coffee over in the temescal district of oakland. Freya Channing is showing a body of work over in a quaint architecture firm over on49th and telegraph. Gabe showed up with his coffee bike serving a delicious lentil soup. i roasted a aromatic Ethiopia bean for the opening. we even had a impromptu dance party for Mercer! Photos by Stephen Dubois.

The Royal NoneSuch Gallery is pleased to present Lending Library, a group exhibition curated by Dena Beard, featuring tools, materials, and resources from artists Anthony Discenza, Lydia Greer, Desiree Holman, Trevor Paglen, Matthew Rana, Sunaura Taylor, and Andrew Rottner.

Comprised of source materials, Lending Library takes a chance to display a line of inquiry rather than a finished object. Michel Foucault said, “dreams are no longer summoned with eyes closed, but in reading; and a true image is now a product of learning.” The seven artists included in the exhibition demonstrate the labor intrinsic to this learned image, making available their visual experiments and scholarly research. These personal libraries bear witness to the conceptual undercurrents the artists’ projects but also to the aesthetic process of folding pages, scribbling in margins, and other devices of reclaiming information. Lending Library gives us a glimpse onto the research and experiments that inform artistic discovery and opens these source materials for public access. -dena beard

bottling beer

last night i bottled beer with the raddest people. Damon who actually did the brewing, brewed a IPA and a belgium. there was 10 gallons of beer we bottled. Bonneau, who is probably the coolest landlord i've ever met brought a couple of bottles of his homemade petite sirah's from the basement. he is an energetic old timer from the south, who helped us bottle and shared his skills. it was a night of great booze and good friends!

the coffee bike is still going strong. recent visits include the grand opening of the SOEX gallery in san francisco and the super pop up shop in alameda, ca. the coffee bike also invited gabe colker who cooked and served homemade organic squash soup for the day to help warm up the folks at the shopping center during the holidays. thanks to all cca grads who welcomed us to their event and the free patches!

D.I.Y sausage packing

Recently my friend Daniel picked up a old school meat grinder for me to play with.
along with a car oil filter used as a sausage stuffer you can make some wonderful
tasting sausages. the first two i made was a filipino longanisa, the short stubby ones above and
a mexican chorizo, the longer reddish ones above. I have also made a lamb linguica that was
so amazing. recipes can be found online or from your local butchers.
i get all my meat from either star market on claremont ave. or from verbrugge on college ave.
the casing from verbrugge is smaller than the casing from star. but equally excellent for
stuffing. all the butchers are friendly and are encouraging for all your meat adventures.

Being on the road for over a month and living in hotels, you start to get excited if there is just a microwave and a fridge in your room. The comforts of home start becoming nostalgic, such as your comfortable bed, your closet full of clothes and most of all your plentiful kitchen. Not having a stove to cook a hot meal for yourself becomes a yearning. So as a DIY enthusiast I have found the use of the hotel iron a useful tool in entertaining for a home cooked meal.

ingredients:
Pork
garlic
onion
olive oil
coca-cola
tapatio

marinate pork with coca-cola, chopped onions and garlic, tapatio
for two hours.
microwave for 3 minutes.
wrap in foil and iron for 15 minutes on each side.

so i took a gig with a media company this summer. traveling the united states with an airstream trailer collecting aha moments, filming, photographing and travel blogging. ive met some really awesome people on our journeys and have come to love small town america. i brought my bike along and have enjoyed many rides with people and through these small towns. the coffee bike has been put on hold for a little while, but will be in action soon enough. hearing all these stories of life changing experiences has really inspired me to start something when i get back to the bay area. you can follow our adventure at http://blog.ahamoment.com

so i recently read that people are generally happier when they use their hands to gather food, cook or make things. processing walnuts by hand is very labor intensive and messy. but will be well worth the pain as nico and i have recently discovered. the price of walnuts at berkeley bowl makes so much sense.

Bridge Tour

So this little troll was built out of the scrape the iron workers took from the carnage left behind from the 1989 quake. They took it to a blacksmith and he made this troll which they attached to the old bridge. So there is your gargoyle Dana.

I really love the juxtaposition of the old and new here.

Also the engineering for the new bridge is quite amazing as far as durability from quakes and such. In answer to attacks the old bridge actually with stood two plane crashes one from a navy plane and the other i can't remember. but i have full faith in the new bridge. the bike lane, well only will go as far as yerba buena island do to the traffic of the cargo ships on the san francisco side...whatever...at least that was there answer. also underneath the new bridge they have installed perches for migrating birds...good ol california...anyway all in all the people from caltrans were really cool and very informative...the experience was really inspiring. it would be awesome to do it again. im going to look into seeing if i can set up a tour if i can get at least 20 people who are interested. so let me know if you want to see the bridge.

so close to finishing nico's modern book shelf. i found the design online, nico drew it on
illustrator and we went down to Piedmont lumber and she bought finished plywood. then we
went to Urban Ore to find some old door hinges.

we live in an age where our food comes in packages and generations are unable to cook.
my roommates and i planted a garden this year. People should grow more and younger
generations should learn to grow. check out some of our sweet tomatoes and peppers.
